Dalton Christopher Barrett

Gaylea-best money ever spent!
Dr Finke with his two Barrett boys he delivered

Several of you wanted a play by play... here it goes.
Saturday, April 2nd, around 5 I started to have more and more cramps/contractions. We decided to still go to our friend, Anna's birthday party because we had had several false alarms and we thought it would get my mind off of it. Jack cut our hedges earlier and he was having one of the worst allergy attacks he's ever had. We had a great time at the party even though I was contracting through the whole thing. At about 8:30 the contractions were full blown and concentrated in my back. My water broke about 9 and my contractions were 2-3 minutes apart, lasting for about 1 minute. This was pretty much the pattern the whole time. We notified our doula our progress and we dug into our pain relieving trick bag-shower, rocking, bible verses, the pretzel, music... I won't bore you. The point is these worked for about 5 minutes and then we'd have to go to the next because my pain was already about an 8 out of 10. Side note: I made a music mix for labor, lots of classical music, but one had this opera song on it. Don't do this. I about busted the ipod.
By 2, Jack was out of ideas and unsure of what to do because my contractions were still close and long, so we called Gaylea, our doula. She is also a labor and delivery nurse, so we felt very at ease that she was going to be helping us (jack was very relieved!) through the labor. She was at the house for about 2 hours and Jack felt like we needed to do something different, so we headed to the hospital. I was in the front seat laying on the console, trying to survive. It's funny the random things I remember from the whole process, for instance Jack saying in the car "Honey, we're about to pass your favorite place, the Hustler".
We arrived at the hospital about 4:45 and I am expecting to be dilated at least to a 7... nope it was a 5. We all charged ahead, no one commented, we just kept working. They moved me from the ob ER to the labor room. I also remember the nurse saying my mom and dad were there-oh brother-why are they already here when I could have a long time to go?! This stressed me out at the time, but I quickly forgot about it.
I digress... I labored for several more hours and they checked me again, this time they didn't tell me but told Jack. He said "You're making progress". I knew what that meant, I was a 6. I took several showers, got in the pretzel position to try to turn him, and did lots of stand rocking (I also remember NPR on in the back ground). The next check Dr Finke-my wonderful OB/gyn who delivered Jack- found my water had not broken all the way. He broke it and Gaylea told me this would speed things up, but may make it more painful. The next check I was a nine and so I was hoping at the next check that it would be time, but instead I had gone reversed! (The nurse said "oh crap" :)) I remember looking at Jack with such despair and saying, "I'm not sure I can do this". Which is funny because what was I going to do? And hadn't I been doing it the whole time?! They tell me this is very common. Jack and Gaylea gave me great words of encouragement and I believed them. Later Jack said he wasn't sure why I believed him because he wasn't sure either, but told me he was. I do remember at one point seeing tears in his eyes, but he kept being so encouraging.
My nurse for the day was amazing. She had lots of experience with natural labor and she was excited to help us. So she stepped in and showed me a breathing exercise to focus and it is the reason I got through. It was a "c" and a breath. Since my body wanted to push SO BAD I had to focus not to. This was the reason I went reverse. I wasn't ready but tried to push so my cervix closed up. I finally focused on this breathing exercise and it worked. Jack took over and he was wonderful. The nurse also busted out the labor bar and labor ball, which helped tremendously at the end.
Dr Finke came in and said I was ready! Jack and I were so relieved. Now we could push... which in the back of our minds we both feared we had two or three more hours for pushing. Everyone had said their first baby took 2-3 hours, so we talked later about how we feared we would have even more work to do. Instead it only took 33 minutes start to finish. I probably pushed about 12 times (3 times at each contraction). Again, Jack was so amazing during the pushing and his face seeing Dalton's head and then the birth was completely amazing. They let me see him coming out and then at the next push, he was out. Dr Finke and held him up and they all said "It's a boy!". They put him directly on my chest, Jack cut the cord, and we balled our little eyes out. Jack and I kissed and hugged, crying, and just could believe the miracle we just witnessed.
I have to say this was the hardest thing I've ever done, but one of the biggest blessings I've ever been a part of. It brought Jack and I closer than we've ever been and to God, who designed my body to do this and was the only strength that got me through. It makes me think of my past patients who would repeat "thank you, Jesus. thank you, Jesus." all the time. It got on my nerves at times, oh but you know I was saying that during the contractions!
We had an amazing experience, which I know not everyone had, nor did I expect. I thought a lot about my expectations of this whole birth and I'm so thankful God chose to let me have it this way. Enjoy some pics from the birth! 9 lbs, 6 oz 22inches

How to go into Labor 101

Before I share the labor and delivery story of my little man, Dalton (the most precious boy ever), I want to share some tips on how to go into labor. What worked and didn't work for me :). Now I jest, but it ended up that God's timing is his timing. He planned this little boy to come on April 3rd long before I even imagined him. I had to keep reminding myself that as I waited for him to come. Looking back I'm so thankful I had the week of staycation from work because I was getting a little on edge each time an intern asked me a question they have asked at least four times before. It was the anticipation of it all... "is it tonight?"- every night Jack and I would wonder. So I wanted to go into labor naturally at all possible, aka not induced, so my doctor gave me 41 weeks without testing. I started to put into place my natural remedies suggested.
1. Raspberry Leaf Tea-Drank it every morning for two weeks. Unless it built up for the two weeks then hit, nothin.
2. Pineapple, eggplant, cumin, spicy foods- I ate spicy foods and pineapple. Neither worked. Although I ate pineapple two days before, so maybe? No, I don't think so.
3. Castor Oil-Now this will send you into contraction mode. I took this a little too early, I wasn't even 40 weeks yet but the weekend was over and I was beginning to go into my vacation time. This was one week before I had Dalton. I had contractions from 8 until 6 the next morning and they stopped. Jack and I got in some good practice for the real thing. I had back labor and d train all night. Then nada. So unless baby is ready, it's not gonna work. Plus, it tastes horrible.
4. Sex-Sorry, it is one of the ways. You already know we do it because of my predicament. It may have contributed. Ah hem.
5. Curb walking-I did this every day for two weeks. The day of I did the stairs at Belle Meade Park. Highly possible this helps. I'd say go for it, it does hurt!
6. Lawn Mower-The nurse practitioner I work with and I joked we will now prescribe to girls overdue the "LM" method. That's lawn mower. I'm not joking. A girl I work with was over due and her mom was about to mow. She got the idea to mow for her on her riding lawn mower. She went into labor the next day.
So it's day 3 after due date and I clean the refrigerator, Jack is working outside a lot, and I get the bright idea to mow my friend Katherine and Brett's lawn. I called her to see and it was fate. She replied, "are you serious?" She said she had just gotten done telling Brett they needed to mow the lawn. 5 hours later, I started labor. Here is the evidence. I'm sure the neighbors got a kick out of seeing me mow the lawn, bouncin' around all over the place. It was quite the sight.

Finished product

I forgot to post pics of the finished bumper, I think everything turned out great. My mom did a great job and from all the hand stitched embroidery, you can see why it was a long process. Thanks, Mom!

Sister's Graduation-1997

Senior Prom at MBA
Honeymoon in St. Thomas
Starting our life at our first house
After buying our first house in Crievehall. Looks different, doesn't it?!
One Year Anniversary
On our cruise to Jamaica and Cayman Islands for our second anniversary. A great surprise.
Our first mission trip to Haiti
One of my many dress up birthdays that Jack puts up with. This one was 80's icons.

4 year anniversary to Blowing Rock
Our Mediterranean Cruise
5 year anniversary in Puerto Rico
Snaps of Evin's Mill. Here's the waterfall that you can hike all the way down, if you want, unless you have a condition.

On our 6th anniversary in January, I surprised Jack with a trip to Evin's Mill in Smithville, TN. Kind of our last trip from home before baby. It was really adorable. A sweet bed and breakfast in the middle of no where with a wonderful four course dinner and breakfast. We did meet one couple (kind of against my no talking to stranger policy:)) that was also pregnant a week apart from us. She was a much better pregnant lady than me. Didn't drink wine, no chocolate-I'll take fruit, thank you very much, and passed on the raw egg caesar salad. I partook in all those things and even tried to hike the treacherous trails that the b and b lady said wouldn't be wise with my "condition". It was a wonderful weekend and we also got massages.
I can't believe it's been 6 years and I've known Jack for 15 years. Crazy. Enjoy some of the pics and some oldies, but goodies. Wee babes! If you didn't know the story, we met in high school at a basketball game. I was cheering- he went to MBA and I to BA. He flirted and flirted and I finally gave in when he kissed me. Yep, kissed then started dating. I knew I wanted to marry him in high school. Totally head over heels... break up freshman year of college and 5 years later, we were married (which I had said a couple years before I would never marry him! ha). God has blessed our relationship and marriage tremendously. Although it hasn't been a bit easy, it has been so worth it and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It is the perfect occasion to celebrate and reflect where we have been and are going. I love Jack's heart, drive, dreaming, perseverance, and love for life and for me. I could not ask for a better husband, really. I adore him and I have a feeling it's only going to get better and better with each year. Here's to 6 years with Jack and getting to experience the next "journey"- as any good bachelor contestant would say.

Birthday, what?

I have totally forgotten to post pics from my birthday party. That is crazy talk. Annual party planned by moi, this year pj's. Lower key than normal, but still dress up. Everyone did a great job. I have to say I spared you from a full shot of my onesie with slight baby bump. Pretty funny sight. Pinatas were hit (this year Mary was banned from going first from her last year first hit that opened it up) and breakfast buffet was enjoyed. It's already coming up on half birthday-May 6th. Just sayin'

Shower

I seriously have the best friends in the world and so therefore I had a few great showers. Each was different and very entertaining. First, was with work where a couple of my co-workers and interns came together on a Friday night (I only work with 11 people) and basically had a dance party.
I made my friend, Kristi, sit in my bumbo. It didn't budge. PS. She is laughing.
Pre-dance party.
The lovely hosts, Mathilde, Kristi, and Nicole.
Um, food was out of this world! Mathilde had her mom send fresh, New Orleans gumbo on her way to town. It was so good. Sushi, cheese, hummus, 3 desserts: gooey butter cake, banana pudding, and chocolate chip cookies surrounding an oreo (holla, what?!).

Our "Nashville" shower was mostly friends from Nashville, or out of town friends. Mary, Lindsey, Alicia, Susan, and Kim through a retro circus themed shower. Very adorable. Here are a couple of pics-Mary took a lot, so once I get them I will post. They also voted on girl/boy and girl won by one vote.
Tinsley, Alicia's new baby girl, made an appearance and she was adorable. She just hung out. It was awesome and made me think maybe babies can be pretty cool. (I'm kidding here, people. I know my baby will be cool)
You may see in the background that my friend, Katy, flew into town for the shower! It was so fun to have her there. I was very honored that she would do that for little ol' me.
The stripey straws were adorable!

Somewhere there are pictures of Lindz holding this popcorn tray. She looked like an adorable cigarette girl from the 40's. I'll have to locate that pic.
Wreath made by Lindz
The hostesses. Kim (childhood friend, since kindergarden and her son will be one in April, so we are thrilled that are children will grow up together, too!), Alicia (high school and Auburn friend), Susan (met her through Lindz and Mary after college and it was like we were sister soul mates), Mary (high school friend/roomie and neighbor), and Lindz (high school/roomie).

Superbowl shower complete with "pick a team" theme. Our community group girls threw it and adorably decorated it upstairs with girl whatnots-frilly dresses, dainty food, oh and of course, Edward. Downstairs it was a man cave with beer, pizza, and a cheese fountain. We had such a great time!
To avoid picking a team (and to induldge my dressing up obsession) we came as refs!

Katie made a girls vs boys gender wars quiz. The boys won by one, but I think the boys quiz was harder. No fair!
Team boy had more votes!

Beer labels of Jack. Love it!
